Curing lights have become indispensable since materials like composites or ceramics have been increasingly used for modern dental treatment protocols. Practice teams work with this device several times a day. This is the reason why it is essential to have a reliable, easy-to-use light.

Searching for a new light that meets the latest technical standards, we came across the VALO™ X LED curing light (Ultradent Products). Its bigger lens (12.5 mm diameter) provides a significant added value: in case of large cavities, the entire surface can be covered directly. The slim shape of the light ensures good access to distal areas and additionally, the light can be used with or without a cord. For our everyday treatments, we usually use the Xtra Power mode, which delivers three intensive light pulses (1.66 seconds each, delivering 13,5 joules in total) with a cooling time of 0.5 seconds in between each pulse. Our patients find this mode more pleasant as it generates less heat. According to Ultradent Products, the same amount of light energy is delivered in both Xtra Power mode or Standard Mode..

The VALO X light is also supportive in the field of diagnostics. The integrated black and white light modes considerably extend the range of use. In total, there are three diagnostic mode lenses, which can be changed quickly thanks to a magnetic system. We like to use the TransLume™ Lens, as its longer wavelength makes it particularly suitable for the localisation of cracks, fractures, and defects. Furthermore, the Interproximal Lens is also suitable for the visualisation of lesions in the approximal area. We also often use the PointCure™ curing lens for the pinpoint curing of veneers in the anterior region.

Another fact that should be emphasized, is the easy handling of the VALO X light. According to the manufacturer, the battery lasts for up to 120 curing cycles before it has to be recharged, which means that a safe curing protocol is generally always ensured.

The operation of the VALO X light is equally facilitated as it only has two buttons. Both of them serve for the activation of the LED light! While the upper button also switches between the curing modes when a longer press is applied, the lower button is decisive for diagnostic purposes. Another completely new function for us is the following one: the curing light switches between the different modes without having to press either of the two buttons – a simple hand movement in the appropriate direction is sufficient.

In summary, this new curing light has convinced us in all respects. Thanks to its ease of use, its user-friendliness, and its different options of use regarding curing and diagnostics, we would not want to be without the VALO X light again.
