The placement of fillings is an integral part of the daily workflow in a dental practice nowadays. While silver amalgam fillings were still considered to be the standard a few years ago, composite fillings are now mainly used. A new direction has also been taken in the field of matrix systems. Today, a large range of matrices is available for the user. Full-matrix systems, e.g. the Tofflemire system, or sectional matrix systems can provide the decisive advantage. A lot of factors play a role during the placement of a filling, starting from the size and position of the cavity up to the level of patient cooperation. But also, the dentist's skills are important.

Particular attention must be paid to the design of the interproximal space, otherwise disadvantages such as secondary caries due to attaching food residues or the resulting risk of periodontitis may occur. Sectional matrix systems help the dentist to better adapt the matrix to achieve an appropriate interproximal contact with the correct anatomical shape. For us, the Halo Sectional Matrix System (Ultradent Products) is a matching system in terms of its components, which can be easily integrated into the treatment process:

Five different matrix bands (size 3.5 - 7.5 mm) are available, each in an original or in a firm version, with and without non-stick coating. Particularly, the small metal lug at the top facilitates an easier adaption to the correct position, while small holes at the top make it easy to remove it later.

The included colour-coded Halo wedges in three sizes can be folded and stacked on top of each other to create an anatomically correct tooth shape. Using the appropriate forceps, the nitinol rings can be attached. They are designed to adapt the matrix to the surface of the tooth so that no filling material will flow away, which would create an overhang requiring time-consuming rework. It is therefore possible for the user to work efficiently and ergonomically, even in remote distal areas.

The system is an outstanding help in the restorative process, both for us dentists as well as for our patients. Thanks to the organized set, we always have a good overview over the different matrix and wedge sizes, which enables us to select them quickly.

The sophisticated nitinol rings can be placed one behind the other at the same time, even for cavities on neighbouring teeth. The anatomical design and a strong interproximal contact are ensured during the use of the system, so that our patients can equally look forward to a satisfactory result. This system will remain an integral part of the treatment process.
