For the past 13 years, I have been offering dental whitening in my practice. Thanks to the experience gained and the trust built, I no longer hesitate to propose these treatments to a clientele that previously would not have been receptive. Our society is experiencing a phenomenon of "youthfulness," manifested by the goal of countering aging through aesthetic medicine and surgery. Those over 60 consume more than 50% of the aesthetic market. It is therefore neither abnormal nor illogical to reorient our treatment plans in favor of aesthetics for elderly patients.   ## **What about gray teeth?** So-called "gray" teeth are actually translucent and might appear gray due to wear and increased translucency of the enamel. We know that the true color of teeth consists of chromatic variations ranging from red to yellow, and gray is not a color component of the tooth. Therefore, older teeth might look grey because of the changes in translucency suffered by enamel throughout the years, as patients age We also know that peroxides (hydrogen or carbamide), which will act on chromophores, will be effective in reducing colorations ranging from red to yellow. It might have less impact on the "gray" component of the tooth (enamel’s translucency). Does the patient want to treat the lack of opacity or the translucency of the tooth? In which case, whitening will not be the optimal treatment. Or, simply, does the patient want to improve the brightness of their smile? Through the therapeutic gradient that presents whitening as a non-invasive treatment, improving the smile, even an aged one, remains an easy and minimally invasive procedure that can provide a satisfactory result. The treatment time can sometimes be longer than usual. Indeed, in aged teeth, the number of chromophores and their aggregation has the potential to make the redox process difficult and long. The aesthetic demand is increasingly present in our clientele, especially among older subjects. Teeth whitening is an excellent way to address the main aesthetic dental concern, namely color. It is a treatment that, when well mastered, brings great satisfaction without risks or dental mutilation thanks to the respect of the therapeutic gradient. However, be mindful of the treatment duration, which can be longer for elderly patients than it is for a young patient, as well as the patient's objective and expectations. Do they want to remove yellowing and brighten their smile, or treat dental wear?
