Goodbye Post-Operative Challenges: Safe and Successful Restorations with the VALO™ X Curing Light

User report by Dr. Stephan Münzhuber

Along with classical diamond burs, handpieces, and contra-angles, a curing light is one of the most important devices in the daily routine of a modern dental practice. Its quality and performance are decisive for the long-term success of restorations. Its curing mode, the handling features, and a certain degree of flexibility play a key role in this context.

Frequently, curing processes are heavily underestimated. In case the layering technique or the polymerization cycles are not ideally performed, the composites will not cure appropriately in depth, resulting in lower adhesion values, post-operative sensitivities, fractures, or pulpal pain. The worst case would be that the treatment must be repeated.

That is the reason, why I, from my point of view, want to choose the best possible device, when it comes to the selection of a curing light. For several years, I have been relying on the VALO™ LED curing lights (Ultradent Products). Beside the classic VALO light, I work with the successor model VALO™ Grand light, both as cordless versions. At the IDS in Cologne (March 2023), the VALO™ X curing light was presented to me at the Ultradent Products booth as the latest development of this product line. Its new and improved functions immediately attracted my great interest.

The VALO X curing light offers two polymerization modes (Standard Power and Xtra Power), which have been further improved compared to the predecessor lights. The ideally focused beam and the parallel alignment of divergent light beams build the basis for a focused treatment as well as a consistent performance on numerous surfaces and working distances. This gives me the guarantee to achieve continuously reliable results. The short pulses of the Xtra Power mode support point curing processes, for example when fixing veneers.

The 12.5 mm lens covers a complete molar in one single curing cycle. In combination with the reduced exposure time (10 seconds instead of 20 seconds) a considerable amount of time can be saved. Regarding the significant number of daily applications, this very pleasant and equally positive from an economic point of view in the long run.

I used to work with a powerful surgery light and illuminated dental loupes. Nevertheless, there are always areas left that could not be ideally illuminated. In these cases, I benefit from the advantages of the VALO X light diagnostic aid modes, which give me the possibility to illuminate the affected areas additionally with white light. Especially in proximal regions, I get a more detailed view on the treatment situation, enabling me to see composite residues, cracks, or fractures, etc. more clearly. The slender shape and extremely low profile of the VALO X light even grants easy access to the most difficult areas in the mouth.

Switching between the individual modes becomes smart and easy with the VALO X light. I can either choose the traditional way of pressing a button or opt for the innovative method of a quick hand movement in a specific direction. After a short familiarization phase, this convenient solution avoids the hassle of searching for buttons and operating knobs.

Initially, I pointed out that the flexibility of a curing light likewise plays a major role for me. On the one hand, the VALO X light gives me a great spatial flexibility due to its long-lasting rechargeable battery and its cordless design. On the other hand, the five accessory lenses assist me to expand my treatment options.

From my point of view, the two most helpful lenses are the PointCure™ Lens and the Interproximal Lens. When point curing veneers or ceramic inlays, the PointCure™ Lens is particularly beneficial as it concentrates the light on a 2.5 mm small opening. This way, the dental floss can be guided through the interproximal spaces without any risk and the excess adhesive residues can be easily removed. Afterwards I remove the lens and perform a second curing cycle without the lens.

It is recommendable to check the light output of a curing light regularly. With the VALO LED curing lights, I have never been faced any negative surprise in this respect. I could have always been sure that the required light intensity has been given or even exceeded.

A great side effect of the VALO X light is its compact, elegant design, which can even be described as puristic. Its slim shape ensures smooth access to all areas of the mouth and an ideal view on the treatment field. Having the lightest weight of its class, it lies comfortably and safely in the hand and does not cause any fatigue – even during longer treatments. The VALO X light does not show any annoying edges, protrusions, or indentations, which helps to make our hygiene processes considerably easier.

In summary, I am fully convinced of the VALO X curing light. It is by far the best curing light I have ever used. It offers me a wide range of treatment options, combined with short curing cycles and innovative, perfectly matching handling properties. The best of the best: I can always be sure of receiving reliably cured, long-lasting restorations. What more could a user wish for?
